In IB curricula, language is not just a tool of communication, but an essential factor that influences self-identity recognition for teenagers. Learning more than one language at school is significant for students to develop multicultural understanding and cultivate critical thinking skills.
For the purpose of better communicating with the world, students from ASJ are trying to get a better understanding of the world through Chinese and English under the guidance of teachers. Let’s take a look at their tricks of cultivating multi-language ability.
As the saying goes, “morning hours is the best time of the day.” Morning time guarantees the most vigorous energy and best memory for humans and that is when students step into morning reading time led by teachers.
Here, students get to dialogue with ancient wise men across time and space by reading classical Chinese poetry. They feel ancient kindheartedness through “not pleased by external gains, not saddened by personal losses”and state governing feelings through “universal responsibility”, which deepens their perception and understanding of Chinese culture and enhances recognition and sense of pride of it.
IB curricula require all students to learn at least one foreign language, which can help them develop their understanding of multi-culture. As an affiliated school of JNU for Hong Kong and Macao students, we appreciate their English ability cultivation. On campus, we create an English-centered community environment in order to provide as many opportunities of English learning as possible in class. For instance, actions such as using English as teaching language and reading materials, memorizing academic terms relating to science and reading English articles and novels improve their English language proficiency to a certain degree.
Through English language teaching, students learn that even though there are differences between people, opinions from others are still worth referencing. “Seeking common ground while reserving differences”, so that they gain more understanding and respect for multi-culture and contribute more for a better and brighter future of the world.

Language is the core of learning and communication. Language learning plays a significant role in empowering students for their full potential. It also is the carrier of culture and the key of other cultures. Multi-language study environment is closely linked to the development of multicultural learning ability and the exploration of global cultural heritage.
In order to enable middle students to better study multi-language ability, we as ASJ will continuously dedicate ourselves to creating a community where they can be recognized, empowered and proved. Meanwhile, we will encourage them to share ideas accurately, straightforwardly and efficiently using various communication strategies. In the future, ASJ will keep practicing multi-language education notion consistently to help every student become a comprehensive communicator who can say, knows how to say and dares to say.
